Acquired: Hawkworld v.1:no.1-3

Wow, sometimes you want to post something and you just never get the chance.  Two weekends ago, January the 30th, was the Big Annual Sale at my local comic shop, Borderlands.  And despite the sleet, snow, and freezing rain, I, Adama, and non-blogger Joe braved the elements to take part in the sale.

Part of the Big Annual Sale is that all of the dollar bin comics are 3/$1.00.  This is usually my big draw, and while I was in fact buying some gaming stuff this year, it was no different.  So after grabbing the models I needed, I slid on up to the first of the long boxes and started flipping.  I say "started" because I soon stopped.  About 3 comics into the bin, I found Hawkworld #1, from the prestige format mini.

Needless to say I was flabbergasted.  I had looked at, you know, actual Cons for this book and had found nothing.  So pulling it out of the discount bin at the Big Annual Sale was just mindblowing.

Then I found, right behind it, issues #2 and #3.

In one fell swoop, for one dollar, I had the entire Hawkworld miniseries.  And in downright gorgeous shape.

This, folks, is why no matter how easy it is to order your back issues online or whatnot, why there is still a large swath of comic collectors who live for this sort of stuff.  For discount bin diving, Con hunting, scouring back issue bins.  And now, thanks to my happening to pick that particular bin to start with, I've made a big step in finishing off my Hawkman punchlist.

All I have left to say is "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Indeed! I'll buy all kinds of crud for $0.10-.50 I wouldn't touch otherwise, just 'cuz.

Your opinion of Hawkworld not withstanding, of course... ;)

Frankly, I was amazed to pull any Hawkstuff out of these bins. I've been over them with the proverbial fine tooth comb. Must be relatively recent additions.

I used to find Hawkman Vol.3 in the cheapie bins all the time-- Hell, I put some in my own. Hawkworld, being a pricier (mature readers?) ongoing was always in shorter supply, and I'm confident I paid something like cover price for my run. I bought the mini-series in trade (which I still have in my physical custody,) but remember selling a set of the 3 at my shop for $10-15 in the early '00s. It's still a quality package, and a good if somewhat infuriating read.

Also, just to be smug, I was the first guy to routinely offer packaged runs as "modular trades" in my area, and all these years later, the biggest local chain has finally gotten in on the act. They've never had the best handle on grading or pricing-to-sell though, so theirs don't seem to move like mine did. (Blows on nails-- rubs across shirt)

Remember dealers: Buy Low, then pass the friggin' savings on, you greedy schmucks!

The two shops in my area offers some stuff as "modular trades" (or as one of them calls it, "Do it yourself trade paperbacks"). I picked up the entire run of Camelo 3000 for a heck of a lot less than DC is asking for it in HC that way. If you have the run, why not batch it up? I know I as a consumer are more likely to buy a whole run than do it piecemeal, given the option and a fair price.

I think I have pulled... lemme see... counting the three Hawkworld issues, maybe 5 or 6 Hawkman issues out of my shop's dollar bins. Typically (and I do no mean typically) there's plenty of X-stuff to choose from, lots of Image, some Valiant, some DC, and some older stuff from across the board. I found my copy of Steel, the Indestructible Man #2 as well as Marvel's Kull The Conqueror #3 (first series) in there, so I can't complain too loudly.

Right now I am trying to figure out what order to read my Hawkstuff in. I need to finish RTH-W, and I have started the third collection of Volume 4, but from there it's wide open.

I didn't realize you'd found the whole Hawkworld Mini. Shows you how much attention I was paying to the world around me. You get sucked into those discounts bins and it can be tough to get back out.

@Adama: Yeah, it literally was the first bin I got to. I'm not sure where you were at that point.

Anyways you were busy trying to figure out which Legion books you had and which ones were which... people say Hawkman's history is confusing, yeesh!
