Read: Brightest Day #3

Issue: Brighest Day #3
Title: "Revelations"
Published Date: June 2010
Generation: Modern Carter, Modern Shiera
Retcon Status: In Continuity

Summary: Tracking down the last of Hath-Set's mercenaries in the Andes, Hawkman and Hawkgirl smash their way to the villian's compound.  While Hath-Set does his work with the bones, the mercenary commander wants to know about his money.  After informing him that the money has been wired to the mercnary's Swiss account, Hath-Set disappears.  The Hawks arrive, take out the last mercenary, and see where Hath-Set has gone: into a vortex generated by all of the bones of their previous lives which have been arranged into a gateway.

Review: Where could a mystical gateway made out of the Hawks' bones lead to?  I'm not sure if the Hawks story in Brightest Day has much to do with the events of Blackest Night or not.  It seems like the other stories, except possibly the Manhunter, are following up on that series, whereas this is going it's own way.  That is not a complaint.

I hadn't really thought of that about the Hawks, but it's true. I guess the fact that they were actually killed during the events of Blackest Night where as the other reborn characters all were dead before Blackest Night even began.

I was really upset when they were first killed, but in the long run, it has given these characters an exciting new story.

I hate to think so longterm while this story is still going on, but I wonder what kind of series we'll get after BD is over? "Hawkman & Hawkgirl"? Just "Hawkman"? Or maybe "Hawkworld" again?

Assuming that the Hawks make it out of Brightest Day in a shape recognizable as Hawkman and Hawkgirl, I forsee either a 5th volume of Hawkman (as Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman has consistently been the costar in the book with that title) or, if DC is still doing oversized books, a return of The Atom And Hawkman. But we'll see I suppose! My predictions have not been the most accurate!

They are going to the Hawk's graveyard. It's sort of like the Elephant's graveyard, but with a lot more dead mice. ;)

Question... Hawkgirl/woman obviously get "rebooted" after Blackest Night. What about Hawkman? Has his connection to the Silver Age Katar Hol changed since his resurrection in JSA ten years ago?

I don't think Hawkman has changed from his last reboot. He still looks the same -- which is to say he has Carter Hall's soul inside of Katar Hol's body, hence the dark hair -- and acts the same, so I am assuming that Johns is running with "his" version of the character.

I still think that the dynamic was supposed to shift back towards Katar Hol under Jim Starlin, but he had Hawkman taken away from him after Rann-Thanagar Holy War and all of it changed. If you by chance read the Hawkman Special (and judging by the sales numbers, you haven't!), it's pretty clear that the intention was to strip away some of the reincarnation angle and return to space.

C'est le vie, we'll never know now!

Thanks for the explanation! I own the Rann/Thanagar War and the Hawkman special. I just haven't gotten around to reading either yet. They are in the ever-growing "to read" pile.

Thanks again!
